Cache Data Feed

June 29th, 2009 Comments off

Now you can get your Geocaching.com cache data for all of Victoria in one place!

I’ve created this facility primarily for GSAK users, as with GSAK the program is only as good as the data you feed it. Generally speaking most people will have a bunch of pocket queries running and then import them into GSAK and refresh/update the GSAK database once a week based on the content of the pocket queries. I’ve found this to be messy and confusing for new GSAK users, hence this project.

  • The file below is a ZIP file which contains two GPX files – one with cache data and the other with associated waypoint data.
  • Normally a GPX file has information in it which links it to a specific GC user, therefore when others use the GPX file many caches appear to them as found when they have not actually found those caches. The data contained inside the GPX files here are not biased towards any user. You should setup your username correctly in the Tools|Options section of GSAK. If you do this, when you import the GPX files(from inside the zip) GSAK will search the log entries and see which caches you have already found etc. This works quite well in testing.
  • I’m looking for Premium GC users willing to donate one or more pocket queries – to run on Friday Australian time – please email me if you can spare a PQ or two
  • If you’d like to see this for other states – email me. – vk3jap@vk3jap.net
  • Access is unrestricted at this stage. if you’re using this data please email me so that when I restrict it I can add you on the allowed list.
  • A GSAK Macro has been written to check for new file versions and download this file then insert into GSAK automagically – thanks Paul.

Here is the file : http://geotech.vk3jap.net/files/VK3JAP-VicCaches.zip

You can check the version by looking at this file (simple format, just Date/Time last modified)
